From the creators of Gorillaz (Damon Albarn, Jamie Hewlett), a Gorillaz-inspired musical entitled, 'Monkey: Journey to the West', is set to make it's New York premiere at this year's Lincoln Center Festival at the David H. Koch Theater from July 6-28. The music featured in the musical was composed by Damon Albarn himself and features animation and designs by the one and only Jamie Hewlett.
Directed by opera and film director Chen Shi-Zheng, the musical is based on the classic 16th century Chinese folktale, “Journey to the West.” The show first debuted in London at the O2 theater in 2007, and has also been performed in Paris, and in 2008 at the Spoleto Festival USA in South Carolina. Here's a better description straight from the musical:
"Be transported into the enchanting, fantastical world of Monkey: Journey to the West in a vibrant musical retelling of the Chinese classic by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, creators of the wildly popular supergroup Gorillaz. Equal parts epic music theater and stunning animation, this hugely successful production includes a remarkable cast of Chinese acrobats, singers, mind-bending contortionists, martial artists, and transfixing animated displays, all under the inspired direction of Chen Shi-Zheng. This spectacular event tells the story of a monk, Tripitaka, who journeys from China to India to find the Buddha and receive the scriptures' enduring impossible challenges. The irrepressible Monkey King leads the monk and his animal companion protectors, creating havoc along the way."
Who knows when Albarn and Hewlett may work together again, so this could be the last collaboration we see from the duo for quite some time. More information about the musical can be found at their official website. Check out a trailer for the musical below along with a portrait of the Monkey King himself, which Hewlett designed for the U.S. run of the show--sure has a Gorillaz-esque influence... Beady Eye (ex-Oasis) released a super trippy music video for their latest track, "Second Bite of the Apple", which comes off their forthcoming sophomore record, 'BE'. Take a look below:
As we all know, there's already a couple of alternate versions of Talking Heads' classic, "Psycho Killer"--well, now there's another to add to the list. According to the AV Club, this version of “Psycho Killer” was recorded with singer/songwriter and noted cellist Arthur Russell. This particular rendition of the song will be included in a selection of previously unreleased Arthur Russell material, which will premiere at an exhibition in Detroit this Saturday (5/25). Take a listen to the somber cello rendition below:
Ha! The Key of Awesome revealed a music video-themed tutorial parody on how to start your own "Mumford" band. Amish-style attire, 'staches, jugs of wine--it's all there. Check out the flick below, filmed for YouTube's Comedy Week:
Hmmm...What is Muse up to? The trio revealed a short cryptic video which changes their "s" in Muse to a "Z". Spelling change? I don't think so. Fan site Muselive pointed out that it could be related to the upcoming 'World War Z' film, hinting at possible ties to the soundtrack as the "Z" used in the clip is exactly the same. What do you make of it? (via SKoA)
Update: Muse will be performing a special concert after the premiere of 'WWZ' on June 2 in London.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Rise Against's classic, 'Revolutions Per Minute', and to celebrate, Fat Wreck Chords will re-release the record on May 28. Appropriately renamed, 'RPM 10', the reissue will include 10 bonus tracks of demos that were recorded during the band's sessions with Jason Livermore and the Descendents' Bill Stevenson at the Blasting Room. Listen to an early demo of "Like The Angel" off the re-release below which is nearly identical to the finished product: (via RS)
